I've been interested in labyrinths for a while now, and took the 3-D challenge up with making a 3-D labyrinth on a quilt.  I used scraps layered on batting, covered with tuelle net, then quilted in a big spiral, edges were covered with couched ribbon and embroidery floss, the labyrinth outline was created with braided strips of recycled cotton/lycra.  Glass beads were added to act as guides as you walk through the labyrinth with your mind.

Labyrinths to me represent a physical way to meditate, using all of your senses and including bodily movement in a walking meditation.  I've enjoyed using my fingers to walk this labyrinth, giving them my eyes and tracing my path, spiraling in to the center, discovering the rich treasure within, then returning back to the outside.

This quilt was made for the Quilt Art 3-D challenge.

Labyrinth #2, Spiral Recycles
October 2003
19"x19"

Scraps and bits of life swirl into one spiral cycling and recycling and cycling once more.  Into the center and out again in a different form.
Materials:  98% recycled materials:  Backing recycled bedsheet, batting scraps, fabric and thread scraps (That most sane people throw out) make up the background, wedding veil tulle netting, and cotton/lycra scraps make up the spiral.  The only unrecycled part is the rayon variegated thread which anchors down the spiral.
